GLAMI Tanzania & AMPLIFY Girls International

Job Description Binti Shupavu Study Coordinator

Background

Girls Livelihood and Mentorship Initiative (GLAMI) mentors secondary school girls in Tanzania to complete their education, develop into confident leaders, and transform their own lives and their communities. GLAMI equips girls to overcome challenges and reach their full potential because educated girls create lasting positive change. The outcome is proactive, resilient, and socially responsible girls who secure better jobs, raise healthier families and increase the standing of women in society. GLAMI accomplishes its mission through two extracurricular mentoring programs: Kisa Project and Binti Shupavu. GLAMI is also a founding member of AMPLIFY Girls.

AMPLIFY Girls is a collective of community-driven organizations in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, and Rwanda collaborating to create a community-based alternative to traditional development scale. Focused on building agentic capacity in girls, AMPLIFY utilizes intentional collaboration to share best practices, develop community-driven research projects and priorities, and to create advocacy campaigns that elevate the impact of community-driven organizations on the lives of adolescent girls.

2. The Project:

AMPLIFY and GLAMI are partnering to conduct a mixed methods experimental research study evaluating the impact of increasing adolescent girls’ agency and other ‘soft skills’ on education outcomes. This is a groundbreaking study and one that will begin to address a serious evidence gap in the girls’ education sector on the importance of girls’ agency for educational attainment. The project is a 4-year study beginning in September 2022, with preliminary results expected at the end of 2024.

The research has three broad aims:

  • First, to evaluate the impact of the Binti Shupavu program on girls’ agency, resilience, and other discrete soft skills identified by the research collaborators.
  • To evaluate the impact of soft skills on a range of education indicators–including retention, achievement, and attainment.
  • Identify the programmatic mechanisms that contribute to girls’ agency.

The study has involved the expansion of GLAMI’s Binti Shupavu Program to Morogoro Rural District (from Arusha/Kilimanjaro) in 2023, and the enrollment of study participants in both ‘treatment’ and ‘control’ groups.
