Tanzania’s public transportation industry will undergo significant changes in 2023, particularly in terms of bus rates. The Surface and Marine Transport Regulatory Authority (Sumatra) recently stated that new bus prices would be implemented across the country. This change attempts to ensure equitable pricing while taking into account bus companies’ operational costs and passenger affordability. In this piece, we will look at Sumatra’s new bus prices for 2023 and their ramifications for commuters and the public transportation system as a whole.

Overview of Sumatra and its Role

Before going into the new bus tariffs, let’s take a quick look at Sumatra’s role in the transportation sector. The Surface and Marine Transport Regulatory Authority (Sumatra) is the Tanzanian regulatory authority in charge of managing and regulating public transportation services. It assures the safety, efficiency, and affordability of the country’s transportation networks, including buses.

The Need for Revised Bus Fares

Learn about Nauli za mabasi Sumatra’s modification of bus rates is motivated by a number of causes. Rising operational costs, such as fuel prices, maintenance costs, and inflation, have put pressure on bus companies, making it difficult for them to maintain services without raising fees. However, it is critical to examine the cost of public transportation for passengers, particularly those who rely significantly on buses as their major form of transit.

Nauli Mpya za Mabasi ya Mikoani 2023 ( New Bus fares Between Regional Center)

Nauli za mabasi Latra through its Director General, Habibu Suluo today Monday November 27, 2023 in Arusha has announced the new fares which have increased at different rates depending on the distance and type of road.

The main reason for the increase in fares has been stated to be the increase in operating costs, including the increase in fuel prices (gasoline and diesel).

Suluo said that buses with a route of less than 10 kilometers will increase from Sh500 to Sh600, the fare of 11 to 15 kilometers will increase from Sh550 to Sh700 and the fare of 16 to 20 kilometers will increase from Sh600 to Sh800.

“Daladalas with a route of 21 to 25 kilometers, the fare will rise from Sh700 to Sh900, those with a route of 26 to 30 kilometers, the fare will rise from Sh850 to Sh1,100,” said Suluo.

The statement issued by Latra also said that for taxis that used to charge Sh1,000 (distance between 31 and 35 kilometers) the price will rise to Sh1,300 and those with routes whose distance is between 36 and 40 kilometers, the fare price will rise from Sh1 ,100 to Sh1,400.

When the fares go up on the side of Daladala by an average of 10 percent, also for long-distance buses, the fare will go up according to the class of the bus and the type of road used.

“Normal grade buses on asphalt roads will charge Sh48.47 per kilometer from Sh41.29 as before and on dirt roads the grade will charge Sh53.32 per kilometer from Sh51.61,” said part of the statement.

Latra has said that it received requests from the passenger transport service companies Super Feo Enterprises, ABC Classic and Happy Nation asking it for the authority to make a review of bus fares following the increase in operating costs, including the increase in the price of fuel (petrol and diesel ).

In addition, in their statement, Latra, which was read by Suluo, said it called a meeting with stakeholders in the sector for opinions on fare levels.

“The authority convened a meeting of stakeholders held in Dar es Salaam, on Wednesday, October 18, 2023, at the Arnaoutouglou hall, to provide an opportunity for these companies to present their proposals to the stakeholders and then collect the opinions of the stakeholders,” said part of the statement.

Key Changes in the New Bus Fares

The new bus fares introduced by Sumatra aim to strike a balance between sustainability for bus companies and affordability for passengers. Some of the key changes in the new bus fares for 2023 include:

  • Distance-based The new bus rates will be computed based on the distance traveled. This guarantees that passengers pay a reasonable fare for the distance traveled.
  • Pricing Zones – Different pricing zones will be constructed to facilitate the distance-based fare structure, splitting the routes into pieces. Passengers will be paid according on the zone in which they travel.
  • higher Minimum charge – To reflect the higher operational costs faced by bus companies, the minimum charge for short-distance travel has been raised. This modification ensures that even short trips are profitable for bus operators.
  • Gradual Fare Increase – To make the transition easier for both bus companies and customers, the new bus tariffs will be imposed gradually. This method seeks to reduce unexpected shocks to commuters.
